				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Website owners often say that they would like to be at the top of the search engines when people search for a certain term, but not many truly understand the implications of what it means to be at or near the top of the page. A recent study by a major SEO company has found the average percentage of click throughs by search engine position on both Google and Bing.</p>
<p>The information from this case study was acquired for a lengthy period of time and was gathered mostly through client data, as well as Google Analytics, and the Bing Advertising Intelligence Excel Add-in. The keywords used were selected at random, but they had enough searches per month to get an accurate sample size. All told, there ended up being more than 170,000 searches that went into the study coming from all over the world.</p>
<p>What the researchers found gives a quantitative aspect to something that almost everybody already knew: the higher up on the search engine your site is, the more visitors it is going to receive. This has been known pretty much since the advent of search engines, but what is interesting is that the study also took into effect how paid ads, second page visits, and re-types played into the situation as a whole as well.</p>
<p>It was found that if your website were at the top of the Google rankings for a particular keyword or keyphrase, you could expect around 18% of the people who typed in the term to visit the very first result, and around 10% to visit the second result. On Bing, the numbers drop significantly, ending up at around 9.7% for the first result, and 5.5% for the second result. What this means is that only 26% of Bing searchers are even going to click an organic search result, however around 53% of Google searchers will click an organic result. What you can take away from this is:</p>
<ul>
<li>The top spot on page one is going to get 18% of everyone to their website for Google.</li>
<li>The same top spot on Bing will get a little under 10%</li>
</ul>
<p>This knowledge is particularly useful to people who run SEO companies, because there are different methods and strategies to building up rank on Google as opposed to Bing. In addition to Google being larger and having more visitors, it is now very clear that your page has about double the chance of getting clicked on, no matter what the rank of it is on the first page, if it is in Google as opposed to Bing. From this it is possible to conclude that:</p>
<ul>
<li>Being on the top of Google will get you more traffic both as a percentage of total searches, and overall as more people use Google.</li>
</ul>
<p>For customers, it&#8217;s nice to know because a study like this actually shows the tangible benefits of a concentrated SEO campaign. It is comforting to understand that you will probably get your money’s worth out of your SEO provider, especially if they get you on page one. This is where you need to be, since the vast majority of people who are going to find you through a search engine are going to be clicking the page one results. Finding a good SEO provider is the first step to getting your website to the #1 spot. They&#8217;ll have plenty of suggestions, and price points that can fit into any budget.</p>

<p>For the sake of this example, we’re going to use a Toronto based restaurant that hasn’t been claimed yet.</p>
<p><strong>Step 1:</strong> Search for your business on Google by using your businesses phone number.</p>

<p>The business we’re looking for is called Shopsy’s Deli &amp; Restaurant.</p>
<p><strong>Step 2:</strong> Click on the link that says Google+ Page located directly below the description of the business.</p>
<p><strong>Step 3:</strong> You will be taken to the Google+ Local page where you will see information about your business. Some listings might already have reviews, whereas others might not. Once you’re ready to claim your Google+ Local page, click on the “Manage this page” link on the bottom right hand side.</p>

<p><strong>Step 4:</strong> Once you have clicked on the “manage this page” link, you will be taken to an actions page. This page will present you with three options. Once you’ve confirmed that this is in fact your business, select the first option “Edit my business information”.</p>

<p><strong>Step 5:</strong> Fill out your business information as much as possible. The more information you supply here, the better it is for your business. Be sure to include images, videos, description of your services, etc.</p>

<p><strong>Step 6:</strong> Once you’re happy with your details above and you have submitted it, you will be presented with some validation methods.</p>

• SMS<br />
• Postcard</p>
<p>My recommendation is to verify using SMS if that option is available. Otherwise, phone is just as good. The postcard verification takes far too long and should be avoided unless it’s the only option available.</p>

Being in IM and fully believing in the program that is taught at Sporting FC in Toronto, I took it upon myself to put a little bit of work into the club website and some basic SEO.</p>
<p>With just an afternoon worth of work (maybe even less), a couple of months ago, some of the benefits are already paying off.</p>
<p>This website was actually only launched in late January of 2012 with very little content.</p>
<p>Unfortunately I&#8217;m not going to be able to give you exact traffic numbers. But let&#8217;s say that they&#8217;re decent for a niche website. So far the website ranks top 5 for a few keywords.</p>
